The first children's hospice in Southern Germany was opened in Bad Grönenbach in the Allgäu in January 2007. Hypo Real Estate Group provides long-term support to the hospice in the form of an annual donation.
Unlike an adult hospice, the work of a children's hospice does not focus on death. On the contrary, this hospice is a "house full of life" says Marlies Breher, director of the children's hospice. The main objective is to support the entire family through a very difficult life phase and to help the family to manage that time effectively. Depending on the specific diagnosis, parents often know for years that their child will die and must adapt their lives accordingly. During this time of enormous strain not only the parents and the affected child but also the child's healthy brothers and sisters will receive support and guidance - over several years if necessary.
